U.S. Secretary of Education meets with Fairfield County Business and Education
Leaders
In May 2007 the presidents of Fairfield County based colleges and
universities and members of the business community met with Congressman
Christopher Shays and U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings on the
competitiveness of our education system.
Education and government leaders participating in the dialogue included Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges, Fairfield University, Gibbs College, Norwalk Community College, Sacred Heart University, St. Vincent's College, University of Bridgeport, University of Connecticut at Stamford, Commissioner McQuillan, Connecticut Department of Education and Commissioner Lewis, Connecticut Department of Higher Education. Business leaders from throughout the region also participated, including Advantage Human Resourcing, The Ashforth Company, The Bridgeport Regional Business Council, The Community's Bank, Pitney Bowes Inc., Sempra Commodities, TSG Ventures, LP, and UBS Investment Bank.
Secretary Spellings focused her comments on the need for more accountability and a results based output. Citing that a third of the US population has a Baccalaureate Degree, she stated the system needs to be twice as productive.
The objective of the One Coast, One Future Higher Education Initiative is to maintain the competitive position of the region by enhancing the quality of the region's workforce through the improvement and expansion of services from local colleges and universities and strengthening linkages with workforce development initiatives.
Through the creation of a Higher Education Council, we will build awareness of common interests, create cooperative relationships, and increase the strategic relevance of local academic resources, while reducing unnecessary competition for public and private resources.
