The Business Council of Fairfield County  Members Getting Smart about Energy Use

The Business Council's SmartEnergy initiative is a response to our region's urgent energy issues and can be an important part of a comprehensive solution by reducing office energy consumption through efficiency measures. Comprised of a coalition of individual businesses, and federal and state agencies, the goal is to make Fairfield County the most energy efficient business community in the nation.

Working with building owners and managers, the initiative initially benchmarked 10 million square feet of space against energy consumption standards developed by the U.S. EPA's EnergyStar program. This initial stage represents more than 20% of the approximately 46 million square feet of office space in the county.

The EPA has conducted the initial assessments for no charge. Funding sources for energy audits based on initial benchmarking finds are now being identified by The Business Council, working in cooperation with Northeast Utilities, the Connecticut Energy Conservation and Management Board, the Office of Consumer Counsel, and private foundations.
