The Business Council
of Fairfield County Honors 30 Companies
from Three States for Creating
Healthy Workplaces
Stamford, Connecticut; February 14, 2011 - -
“So how many of you worked out this morning?” asked Jed Dow, Senior Manager,
Health and Fitness, Deloitte Services L.P., of an audience of over 160 at
the Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition Event hosted by The Business
Council of Fairfield County.
Even at 7:45am, with some honorees arriving from New York, Danbury and Mansfield, CT, there was a healthy show of hands. It was a fitting opening as The Business Council of Fairfield County kicked off its third Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition Program, held at the Holiday Inn in Stamford, CT.
“Today is big!” commented John King, Chair, The Business Council of Fairfield County’s Wellness Roundtable and Vice President, Client Development, UnitedHealthcare of CT, Inc. “Thirty companies are here to be honored for their cutting edge programs to promote healthy workplaces,” King said. “We have tripled participation since The Business Council launched this effort in 2007, a clear indication that companies are increasingly recognizing the value of wellness programs.”
There were three categories of distinction, Platinum, Gold and Silver, awarded on the basis of program components and outcomes.
Those being recognized in the Platinum category include Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (North Haven, CT); Big Y Foods, Inc. (Springfield, MA); Cartus (Danbury, CT); Deloitte (Stamford, CT); IBM (Somers, NY); Town of Mansfield, CT, Mansfield Board of Education, Region 19 Board of Education and Eastern Highlands Health District; Nestlé Waters North America (Stamford, CT); People's United Bank (Bridgeport, CT); Pitney Bowes Inc. (Stamford, CT); Sikorsky (Stratford, CT); Stamford Hospital (Stamford, CT); Tauck (Norwalk, CT); and Terex Corporation (Westport,CT).
Those being recognized in the Gold category include Ability Beyond Disability (Bethel, CT); American Heart Association (Westchester/Fairfield Counties); AmeriCares (Stamford, CT); R.C. Bigelow (Fairfield, CT); University of Hartford (West Hartford, CT); Mediacom Communications (Middletown, CT); Pawling Corporation (Wassaic & Pawling, NY); Purdue Pharma L.P. (Stamford, CT); Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT) and XL America (Stamford, CT).
Those being recognized in the Silver category include Compass Furnished Apartments (Stamford, CT); Fairfield County Bank (Ridgefield, CT); 1-800-Flowers (New York, NY); Rockwood Service Corporation (Danbury, CT); Silver Hill Hospital (New Canaan, CT); St. Vincent's Medical Center (Bridgeport, CT) and Telephonics Corporation (Farmingdale, NY).
The recognition ceremony was followed by a panel dialogue with an honoree presenting from each of the award categories; Fairfield County Bank, Ability Beyond Disability and Cartus.
A common theme among the presentations was the significance of employee engagement, not just in incenting healthy behavior changes, but also when designing wellness programs and activities.
At Cartus we know that a focus on wellness is great for the company and its employees, said Amy Meichner, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Cartus. “We strive for this shared success in our approach to wellness.”
